Remix Culture & Sampling.

Dj Shadow & Gotye.

After doing a bit of research on iconic remix/sampling artists I have come up with DJ Shadow as a key sampling artist as well as Gotye.

This is because his album ‘Entroducing….‘ is made entirely from samples. He has sampled from genres such as hip hop, jazz, funk, psychedelia and also from interviews and films. This album was released in 1996 and it was even put in the Guinness World Records as the first album to be made entirely from samples.

After never really listening to this style of music I find it very interesting and it makes me curious as to where the samples were originally from.

The second artist I think has been important to the world of sampling is Gotye. His song ‘Somebody That I Used To Know‘ was created by samples, except the singing. I learnt that by watching an interview where he explains all the samples he uses, where he heard them ect ect.
The main sample in this song is a guitar riff from Luiz Bonfá’s song “Seville“.
The reason I have included Gotye in this blog post is because his song was such a huge success. It was number one in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, UK & the USA.
